Golden Bay High School has a wonderful canteen that is open on a daily basis and stocks a wide range of healthy, filling and enjoyable food. Unlike the majority of canteens in schools, most of the food that is sold is made on site, thanks to the canteen team of Jill Foxwell (manager), Chris Campbell, Adriarne Robertson and Sharon Cornell who all share the workload. The Home & School Association, led by Paula Miles, has been the driving force behind this venture and they developed the original healthy food guidelines.
A visit to this area of the school will swiftly start the nose twitching and the
taste buds tingling! You will find the most glorious smells of freshly baked bread sticks with garlic, cheese pinwheels, or cheese and sweet chili flatbread melts, crisp salad filled ciabatta, chicken wraps, comfy bacon and egg pies, and apricots and chocolate being swirled into muffin mix. The food has been greeted with enthusiasm by students and staff, and when asked about comments they said the only ‘negative’ one was “there’s no coke!” - though that has to be a positive comment, surely?
We have EFTPOS facilities in the canteen so students therefore do not have to bring cash to school. The canteen is excellent value for money with nothing currently over $4. There is a suggestion box for students, staff and parents - of course food suggestions must be within the bounds of the school "healthy food policy".
The menu changes frequently - during International Languages Week food prepared was associated with the featured language (French, Japanese, German, Spanish and Chinese) and this proved popular with staff and students alike.
Special dietary requirements are also catered for ie vegetarian, gluten free etc - if you talk to Jill she is happy to prepare whatever it is you need at the start of the day for pickup at lunchtime.
