ERO Review 2017
Letter to parents/caregivers
The ERO review is a three yearly audit from the Education Review Office of the quality of education that a school provides and that the students receive. ERO reports on the quality of education and learning outcomes for children and specific groups of children including Maori and Pacific Island students and students with special needs. The review also looks at the quality of the schools systems for sustaining and continuing improvements.
The report is broken down into four sections; Context, Learning, Curriculum and Sustainable Performance.
There were some areas ERO identified in 2014 that had yet to be addressed. Some governance and management areas were of concern and some compliance issues needed addressing. The 2017 review identifies areas where there are strengths, weaknesses, positives and negatives. It identifies actions that the board need to take and actions required of the Senior Leadership Team/management. In some cases, it offers guidance on where or how to address these issues.
On the whole, the report was not a big surprise to the board. We knew there were issues around the management and governance that required attention, and to that end the board had asked the Ministry of Education for a Limited Statutory Manager (LSM) to guide us through these areas. We had identified that additional reporting was required by staff to help identify areas of concern where students were lagging behind their abilities and potential. We knew there were some areas of compliance around International Students and Health and Safety that needed tightening up. Previous board minutes show that these had been identified and processes were being formed to address them.
Since the initial draft ERO review was brought before the board, several areas of compliance have been addressed. The board is forming a timetable of goals for the coming year to address the issues raised by the review. At each board meeting a progress report will be tabled and progress summarised for the school community. The LSM will advise the board on progress made and has been working constructively with the board and staff.
The conclusions of the review are that Golden Bay High School continues to maintain an overall trend of positive achievement though more work is needed in some areas. Student wellbeing and support for learning are prioritised. The school makes good use of the people and expertise in the community and this shows in the broad range of learning opportunities our students have.
We look forward to the next ERO review, where we can show progress made and again showcase the wonderful group of students we have here.
Please feel free to email with any questions around the review and we will do our best to answer them.
