Golden Bay High School’s library caters for approx. 300 students and staff and has over 6000 items on the library catalogue. It is open on school days from 9am to 3.15pm. Our school librarian is Mrs Yvonne Whiting; the teacher with library responsibility is Mr Pete Mitchison. The librarian is assisted in the library during Interval and lunchtime by student librarians. The librarian is available to help students find recreational reading, relevant material for research and also supports classroom teaching.
Students are encouraged to read and to support this we have a DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) program in place where the students literally ‘drop everything and read’ for 15 minutes a day. New books on the display stand are changed weekly and students are encouraged to reserve any that interest them. A list of new books that arrive in the library can be found on this Wiki. Students are able to access online resources from the computers in the library and laptops which are booked by the teachers for class use.
Our Library Blog is up and running and has links to many useful resources along with summaries of new books in our library. Students and staff have the opportunity to comment on what has been posted; make suggestions for possible purchases or recommend books for our library.
For our senior students we have a Wide Reading Wiki. This wikispace has been set up to provide lists of resources for our students when selecting titles for their Wide Reading unit, and will also provide suggestions for themed reading. Some of the web pages contain clickable links, which will take you to the post on our blog about that title. This Wiki is available for use, or contribution to, by teaching staff and other interested parties.
