Golden Bay High School has a large 30m pool that is heated to about 25 degrees. It is open from mid October until mid April. The general public are able to use the pool in the summer holidays for lane swimming if they purchase a key, it is open to the public in the summer holidays during the hours of 12 - 4pm and is fully supervised . Our school pool is the first in the country to have an oxygen treatment system as mentioned below.
Golden Bay High School pool first to end chlorine nuisance
Golden Bay High School has become the first school in the country to install an innovative oxygen treatment system for its swimming pool. The new system, which has reduced the chlorine content of the water by up to 95 percent, means no eye sting, no chlorine smell on the skin and no bleached hair, says EcoSmarte company distributor Brad Harwood-Heising. Installed at the high school pool this week at a cost of just under $25,000, the oxygen-treatment is already widely used overseas but has been slow to catch on in New Zealand.
Golden Bay resident Mr Harwood-Heising said it had taken 18 months of talks with the school’s Board of Trustees before they decided on the scheme. Other schools in the region were now considering the new treatment, he said. ‘‘The same system was used in the 2004 olympic pool in Athens. It is both cheaper to run and healthier than conventional pools which use chlorine,’’ he said.
The Richmond Aquatic Centre had problems earlier this year when strong chlorine fumes gave staff headaches. Chlorine was also known to aggravate asthma, Mr Harwood-Heising said.
A combination of mostly oxygen with very low levels of ionic copper and chlorine was guaranteed to destroy any pathogenic organisms, said fellow Ecosmarte spokesman Sarva Keller, who travelled from Australia to install the new system over the weekend. When used in domestic pools and spas no chlorine was required, he added.
Kimi Ora Spa Resort installed the system last year.
