Physical Education / Outdoor Education

Golden Bay High School has a wide range of summer and winter sporting opportunities.

Because of our climate and beautiful surroundings, we can offer activities such as tramping, caving, rock climbing, fishing, boating, and mountain biking.

We can also offer volleyball, table tennis, horse riding, rugby, tennis, rock climbing, soccer, squash, hockey, netball, basketball, golf, at both social and competitive level and many other sports.

Students are given opportunities to develop their social and movement skills and are encouraged to develop more responsibilities for their future health, recreational and sporting futures.

In Physical Education  the focus is on movement and its contribution to the development of individuals and communities. By learning in, through and about movement, students gain an understanding that movement is integral to human expression and that it can contribute to people’s pleasure and enhance lives. They learn to understand, appreciate, and move their bodies, relate positively to others, and demonstrate constructive attitudes and values. This learning takes place as they engage in play, games, sport, exercise, recreation, adventure and expressive movement in diverse physical and social environments.

Physical Education encourages students to engage in movement experiences that promote and support the development of physical and social skills. It fosters critical thinking and action and enables students to understand the role and significance of physical activity for individuals and society.

In Outdoor Education students need to have a willingness to give adventures a go; all field trips are compulsory. Base skills are taught for a career in outdoor pursuits, tourism, guiding, and teaching. Teamwork skills taught are valued by all employers. Skills and knowledge learnt on this course will be useful for lifelong recreational pursuits in the outdoors and all other employment options. Check out http://www.skillsactive.org.nz/ for further information.

Students will develop leadership, teamwork, communication, determination, confidence, integrity, and many other skills through physical and mentally demanding real world activities. These skills are an essential component of all employment options and will give OE students a leading edge on other graduates.
  • Units are taught to give a practical introduction to a wide variety of outdoor pursuits, including whitewater kayaking, river crossing, tramping, caving, rock climbing, abseiling, and orienteering.
  • Theory units on navigation, weather, risk management and first aid are taught to support the safe practise of outdoor activities.
  • An emphasis on co-operative teamwork is reinforced through an Adventure Based Learning programme.
  • Most units have both a theory and a practical component.
