OUR AIMS AND PHILOSOPHY

ADULT STUDENTS
We believe continuing education is very important, no matter what age one may be, so we encourage and welcome adult students into our school.  Places are available for adult students in most regular day school classes. Please contact the Office for details.

SENIOR LEADERS 

All Year 12 and 13 students can become Senior Leaders, taking on a variety of leadership responsibilities throughout the year.

These include “Big Brother, Big Sister”, academic mentoring, sports coaching, representation of the school, etc.  Involvement of this sort helps to develop the skills of the senior students while providing positive contact between them and younger students, encouraging both groups to participate fully in school life.

Student Executive
The Year 13 Student Executive and Head Students are selected using a process including student votes, teacher references and an interview.
They are responsible for running a variety of events, and for providing regular feedback to school leadership.

​Student Committees
Student committees are led by a member of the student exec and made up of four to six students. Each committee also has a staff member supporting.
Student committees include: Sport Committee Environmental Committee Ball & Events Committee Arts & Culture Committee Ambassador Committee Students will have an opportunity to express interest in joining a committee in Term 1 each year.

​GUIDANCE AND DISCIPLINE 

Te Waka Kura o Mohua is a restorative  school.  This means that our first and foremost objective is to get students to take responsibility for their behaviour, and to plan for ways to make sure that their behaviour is acceptable in future.

The school has a structure in place for dealing with behaviour which is not acceptable..

Classroom teachers are responsible for guidance and discipline. They will deal with minor offences. They may contact parents if necessary.

If the undesirable behaviours persist, or where there are more serious problems, a classroom teacher will make a referral to the form teacher, who will then work with the student to bring the behaviour back within the guidelines.

When there are more than two referrals the Dean, and ultimately a Deputy Principal or the Principal will work with the student. Parents will be notified after the second referral, and will often be contacted after the first referral.

Any serious offences will be referred straight to a dean or member of the Senior Leadership Team.
